News @ August 2001

28th August 2001
YAY!!! The crowd goes wild!!! Its Update time!! We've got the ability to upgrade the site, and we will be making a concrete decision about it at the next meeting.
The polls are SLOWLY tallying, last time I checked, they were neck-and-neck with 3 votes for yes, and 3 votes for no. We'll see how the results finally tally at the end of the week.
The photo album was updated today, we'va added a few pictures from the latest Newcastle-JAVA Operation meeting. Check them out!
We've got a decent setup for the Dead Members section, and it was updated today. Thanks to Ladadadada for the Image of the gravestone.
24th August 2001
Well, its a small, small change, but check out the Members page... We have changed the users names to match their nominated colours on the MOO. Its not very exciting, But I believe it warrants a place in the news, considering Yesterdays...
At the request of another member, PreDOMiNanT's Image in the Members section has been changed...
23rd August 2001
Finally, all the current members are listed on the Memebrs page, and the 'dead' members have been moved to their appropriate section. Take a look at the new crew.
22nd August 2001
Sorry about the delay in updates, but we have been organising the meeting, and yes, it took place today, asnd was th best we have had since our beginning. Check the schedule page, and you'll see that all items to be discussed, have been. Congrats all!!
We oficially have 3 members to add to the team, and will shortly be removing 2 of the current members from the Site.
Unfortunately, one of our prospective members has opted out, due to current workload, but we look forward to more joining us soon.
The Member page will be updated soon, within the week, or over the weekend with luck. Check back soon for new member pictures and details.
We are making an active effort on the Code Library within the next few months, so hopefully we'll have some completed code up for posting, we expect results about 1 - 2 weeks after the SENG111 assignment is due.
Unfortunately, I have no more faith in the HostedScripts Graphical counter. We have reset the counter to count from 22nd August onward. I hope this is satisfactory.
16th August 2001
We're all getting sick of HostedScripts stuff-ups. I know. Today the new poll was stuffed up and there was no text in the window. This has been fixed. We had to remove the poll all together, and add a new one. Its working now. Cast your votes here.
We've recieved permission to use certain essays from SENG114 Debate 1. We'll post the new ones as we're allowed. You can view the current ones here.
15th August 2001
Well, I have closed the poll. Votes have been tallied and the results are promising: We had 36% FOR the removal of anonymity from the HippoMOO, and 64% AGAINST the removal of anonymity from the HippoMOO.
The new Poll will be starting soon. Keep an eye out!
The HippoMOO section will be updated (again) soon, with details on setting up your tkMOO client on a windows Machine. It was mentioned in lectures that people are having a lot of trouble getting local Editing configured properly. Hopefully this will help.
Java Source from the SENG112 course is on its way - keep an eye out!
We've added a COUNTDOWN to the Schedule page, so you all have an Idea of how long there is until the next Member Meeting. Get any important matters to the Webmaster before this counter resets!  remaining until the next member meeting.
13th August 2001
Long time since an update, I know... But you will be happy to know that the HippoMOO section now contains HTML versions of the Tutorials!!! Yay!! Thanks heaps to bliXy for the suggestion, It has been an excellent addition to the site.
SENG114 MOO Objects for the first assignment are looking good. Code will be posted after the assignment is due
Also, the SENG114 debate draws near, and we'll be posting the essays of the negative team from group 7, and hopefully, with permission... The essays from group 7 Affirmitive!! Keep an eye out!
We're also considering adding a VERB Programming section - to assist all you guys and gals out there. I know the lectures have not been that "informative" (no harm intended Richard). Hopefully we will discuss this at the meeting.
Damn HostedScripts stuffed up again... The counter reset to 00 recently, and I was unaware. I have placed the counter on my last recollection of its value. it was reset to 675. Damn Free Hosting crap.
Finally, Visitors: Please remember to REFRESH the screen for the latest updates. IE tends to keep a page in cache and refer to it unless you refresh.
9th August 2001
I have had a few people approach me concerning membership. Unfortunately, we don't have much room at the moment to support any more members. We will be announcing the results of the meeting as soon as it finished and we have sorted out the details of new members etc.
The debate draws nearer for SENG114, and Group7's essays are being submitted today. Kepp an eye out for the posting of the essays on this site. We are arguing for the Negative team.
8th August 2001
The room booking for the upcoming meeting is getting a little impossible. I have tried getting a staff member to authorise the room for us, to no avail. We will try elsewhere.
The HippoMOO section needs some verbs posted. We're not sure how to approach this as yet, perhaps an index of verbs? Maybe a search engine? Who knows.. We'll need to discuss this one as well.
I have decided to post my essay for the First Debate, but not until the debate is finished. I will appraoch the other members to see if they will add theirs as well. It should be interesting to see how each person approached the task, and how each person PREPARED!!! These will be placed in the HippoMOO section when the debate is finished.
The Newcastle-JAVA Operation's mailing list has finally reached its 10th post! Congratulations for us!! If you would like to subscribe, click here.
6th August 2001
Member inquiries are SLOWLY... Every so slowly coming in. We have decided to meet all these new arriving people at the next meeting. We'll let you know how it goes.
5th August 2001
Okay People... The news that you have been waiting for... The long awaited NEW Code Library has begun reconstruction. It is by far, the most time consuming section of the site, which explains why it was left to last. If you have any layout and presentation ideas, please feel free to contact the WebMaster. We need all the help we can get here.
We're also considering a 'site upgrade' with freeservers to get rid of those annoying banners. This has been added to the Schedule for discussion at the next meeting.
4th August 2001
Early this morning, we were contacted by a new prospective member. We will be asking him to attend the next Newcastle-JAVA Operation meeting, to see what he has to offer the group.
The Schedule page was updated today. It now lists the items to be discussed and improved at the next meeting of The Newcastle-JAVA Operation.
3rd August 2001
A sad day indeed as the only female member of The Newcastle-JAVA Operation is relieved of her position. Not our fault. It was entirely bliXy's choice, but now the tides have turned and you're looking at a 100% male owned and operated site!!
At this point I would like to start another member reach-out as we need to fill the hole created due to bliXy's leaving. Go here to see the member registration section of the website.
The Poll results are interesting, and it has been neck-and-neck the whole way. This poll will run right up until the first debate is due for SENG114 (The Online Society).
Due to the leaving of a member, we will be discussing the construction of a 'Dead Members' page... Check back soon for developments.
1st August 2001
I have been running a small 'experiment' if you will... I left the title to this page as 'JUNE 2001' for the entire month of JULY, and no-one notices or complained about it. I wonder how much of this page is actually read by the users!!!
I have been receiving complaints about people that are using anti-virus software whilst using this site. It complains about activeX and JAVA Apparently. I assure you that the Java code is not designed with a viral intent, and you can put your minds at ease.
bliXy has made us all aware of her disgust with the fact that users may only vote once on the Poll setup for the next few weeks. This is a precautionary measure to ensure that the vote tally is not inaccurate.
GoMo was recently advertised on the site, and people were complaining that you can only send 10 SMS messages for free, and then the service requires that you purchase pins to send any additional SMS messages. Well, this is not my fault. I placed the banner here so that you can all take advantage of this 'free' service while you can. Hope you enjoy it while it lasts!!!
Finally, July's news for 2001 has been added to the Old News Section
