News @ July 2001

30th July 2001
Well, once again Hosted Scripts has lived up to its expectations, as endless hoards of people (about 5) have had trouble placing their votes on the current running Poll. Hopefully, as they usually do, they'll fix the problem in the NEAR future. I have sent them another email... Fingers crossed...
The most popular site on this site (as recorded by our server) is the Frontpage, followed by the members page, then it is closely followed by the HippoMOO page!!! Congrats on the members who decided that the HippoMOO was a good move to add to the site... Thanks guys!
29th July 2001
Stats are looking good for the New HippoMOO Section of the site. We are all hoping this keeps up, and maybe we can be listed as the site of the month on the FreeServers Homepage. Keep it up people!!
Other than the news above, there is not mucg to report today... Ah well... Keep an eye open for the posting of the new SENG111 tutorial answers.
Okay, new news... I have been trying a few Macintosh MUD clients, and I have heard only good things about Rapscallion which can be downloaded from here. Hope all you iMAC and other macintosh users enjoy this client.

We've had a problem with the hosting of the HippoMOO Tutorials. Thanks to 'ladadadada' for spotting the problem. We've relocated the tutorials, and they should be error free. Visit the HippoMOO section to download the tutes.
We're going to run a poll linked directly to the First Debate question for SENG114. "That the anonymity of Characters within the Hippo Campus environment should be removed." Click Here to cast your votes.
26th July 2001
As promised, the new HippoMOO Tutorials are now available for viewing or download. They can be located at their own little section of our site, cleverly named 'HippoMOO'. The files have been created and saved in Microsoft Word format. If you have any problems viewing them, please let us know, and we can list a generic format as well. They appear in an uncompressed and a compressed format, for your convenience.
Three of the members of The Newcastle-JAVA OIperation are working on their own rooms in the HippoMOO, on the tenth floor of the Cutler tower, at the northern end of the hallway... The three of Us (PreDOMiNanT, Technomage, and SoggyGibblets) are building a large complex of interconnected rooms for fun. Visit it and tell us what you think...
The Schedule section of The Newcastle-JAVA Operation has been updates to reflect what was discussed at the meeting on Wednesday. A few topics are still open for discussion, and have been moved back to the next meeting.
25th July 2001
The Newcastle-JAVA Operations first Meeting was held today, minus 2 members, but that's okay. We discussed a few topics, and we all met each other in person (some for the first time).
Okay, we have decided on a place to put the new HippoMOO stuff, and It will be up and online By tomorrow...
Keep visiting people!!! We are currently in a very exciting time for the Newcastle-JAVA Operation. We're all looking forward to the work ahead.
24th July 2001
We're Back up... Finally... Damn Telstra BigPond... Lets not go there. Well, we're up and running again, but I will kepp this update short. We're currently looking for somewhere to put the HippoMOO environment tutorials. This will be discussed on Wednesday 25th July.
Keep a look out for the first SENG112 tutorial posting!!! Should arrive soon.
21th July 2001
We've come as close to a shut-down as possible... Damn computer packed it in again. This time, it was a funny little problem. SoggyGibblets and PreDOMiNanT were playing with Internet Sharing, when they installed the standard Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing supplied with Windows '98. This argued with the MS FrontPage Web Server, and FrontPage suddenly decided that it would no longer read the site. "FUCK" was the first word out of PreDOMiNanT's mouth. 8 Hours later, the HTML was being cut and pasted into a NEW Web. Hopefully this is the end of our complications for now.
Okay, after all the drama's, we're adding a new topic to the upcoming Member meeting. We will be discussing the placement of the "HippoMOO" Tutorials on the site. I am unsure as to whether or not it should get its own section or become a sub-section of the Code Library.
20th July 2001
The Schedule section has finally been updated!! We have posted the topics of conversation to be discussed at our meeting on Wednesday 25th July, so that you know what serious topics will be discussed...
Not much news today... but hey, gimme a break!!! Its only been today for 2 hours and 36 minutes!!!
19th July 2001
Well, We've taken a look at the MOO, and we approve. PreDOMiNanT has been helping helping out in a little way, by hanging around at the 'Login Chamber' to assist any possible SENG114 students logging in as Guests. He is currently working on grabbing the tutorials from the HippoMOO, and getting them ready for posting here. We'll let you know when they are ready.
WELCOME!!! We have a new member, one that promises to colour our lives from this day forward. WELCOME bliXy!!! Visit bliXy's Bio and picture, and send her an Email, or just admire her beautiful face... Or not... Up to you!!
Our efforts with purchasing new machines for SETI Crunching has been so far, unsuccessful. We'll keep trying, and we're currently working on building a few older machines back up, and giving them a go. We'll keep you posted.
MmmmmKay, hopefully the page will be a little bit quicker loading now. I have removed the LARGE block of text that was June's News, and placed it on a separate page. It is at the bottom of this page in the Old News Section. Hopefully this will fix up the problems that people have been having... Like 5 minute downloads of the frontpage...
17th July 2001
Back into Uni and things are looking good... SENG112 promises to be a little more challenging, but will also promise so new and exciting java Code to add to our ever-growing library... Updates will be posted as soon as the Tutorials start.
The Newcastle-JAVA Operation would again like to open its arms to any budding programmers, or long-time programmers that would like to join out team. Unfortunately our last applicant has opted out due to a Course change at University, so we'll welcome any new applicants to please email the Webmaster at java.webmaster@newcastle-java.scriptmania.com. We eagerly await your application!
Here's a NEW POST for those people that have been posting CRAP in the Discussion board... I finally figured out why I couldn't find the spell-checking tool today. It was a simple matter of adding it to the toolbar!!! Ha Ha Ha, hopefully we won't experience as many spelling mistakes now that all that is in order...
SENG114 looks to be an exciting subject, and we would love to hear your idea's about how you will be approaching the Individual and Group assessments that will be set. We'll be dedicating a page on our site to your Idea's and thoughts. Email them to our WebMaster and we'll keep you posted.
Stay Tuned for the Moo Clux Clan's latest Clan game of Half-Life: Counterstrike. We will be posting the latest screenshots here, but if you cannot wait, then visit the MCC Forums.
15th July 2001
Okay, I have adjusted the display of the ICQ Status of each user, so that you no longer need to submit a form to see their status. Each users status is determined upon loading of the Members page. Hope this works a little better.
SETI Should be taking off for The Newcastle-JAVA Operation very shortly.. We have looked into purchasing some additional computers to assist both SETI WU crunching, as well as a bit of Gaming etc.. Look here for future reports.
13th July 2001
Exam results are in!! Congratulations to PreDOMiNanT with a High Distinction   in Software Engineering! More results to come...
SETI@home ... I have been trying to get the group number from the SETI server, but IE doesn't like huge amounts of information displayed on one screen at and single given moment.. This will be fixed soon.. In the mean time, If you are interested in The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, you can visit SETI@home here.
If you do find this distributed processing project interesting, email the WebMaster for information on joining our SETI group for a collaborative effort on the SETI Statistics!!
12th July 2001
One Day left Until we get Exam Results!
Finally, found a place to host the Newsletter. You can Now Subscribe and get regular updates straight to your Email address!
We may have found some support and assistance with permanent hosting (no ads). No promises, but we will be looking into it further in the near future. Wish us luck!
Well, in regards to the Telstra conference... Nothing special, just a notification that their pricing's will be changing VERY soon. They are attempting to make the call rates and plans more 'competitive' as well as a revision of the Handset prices... Thats all they had to say.
11th July 2001
New Java (TM) Logo on the top of the page... Downloading JASC Paintshop Pro so that we can sort out some transparency issues.
The Hit counter is back up... Properly this time... it has been up and down for the last few days.
Slow progress my friends... The Code Library has NOT CHANGED! Inspiration is at an all time low... We'll come up with something soon.
Meeting with a possible new member for The Newcastle-JAVA Operation on Monday 16th July. Hopefully we have yet another talented and motivated member to assist the site. We'll let you know...
Meeting with the Dean of Engineering today. Maybe a chance to slip in a promotional hit for the Newcastle-JAVA Operation?
Going to the Telstra Conference tonight, hope to bring you guys back some late breaking news on new phones and services etc... Thats is if they actually have anything interesting to say...
8th July 2001
Well, I am back in Newcastle, and Uni will be on again in the next week... Looking forward to the new courses and the new additions that It will bring to the site!
In the next coming weeks, the new Code Library should be getting some regular attention, to get it spruced up for our proposal to the Newcastle University. We have had quite a few visitors during the semester, people looking for help with their programs etc. So we have decided to approach the Lecturer to see if this page can be added as an official resource for the SENG111 subject. Wish us luck!!!
Let us know what you think of the Discussion Board!!!
4th July 2001
Screw you American bloody Independence day crap celebrationists.
As for the praise that was given to HostedScripts yesterday. I am going to take this opportunity to withdraw that comment, and say that they are highly unreliable. Already our counter is inactive, and I will be looking closely for its return.
Well, Please visit the Members section and be sure to check out Mother of Beef's piccy, which has been recently added. Not the most attractive guy... But we can put up with him.
Okay, so I am bored. Send me something funny, and I will place it online... Very Very bored... Thanks People!
3rd July 2001
Alrighty People!!! I am officially on holiday.. But will continue with the Page.
I have added a new Hit-Counter at the top of this page to keep a track of things. Thanks to www.hostedscripts.com
The Newcastle-JAVA Operation would like to celebrate 1000 hours of SETI Processing time!!! Thats right!! It was precisely 1000 hours, and 50 work units!!!
PreDOMiNanT is away from Newcastle for a while, but will be back bigger and better than ever in a matter of weeks... Don't miss him too much...
